Operation in Rio targets gang of illegal gambling killers; 13 PMs are targets of search

The Capital Homicide Division (DHC) is carrying out an operation this Thursday (8) against criminals involved in several murders ordered by the illegal gambling industry in Rio de Janeiro. In total, one arrest warrant and 41 search and seizure warrants are being served, of which 13 are against military police officers suspected of involvement with the gang.

The only arrest warrant was served, in Baixada Fluminense, against Ryan Patrick Barboza de Oliveira, 23 years old, investigated by the monitoring of businessman Antônio Gaspazianni Chaves, owner of Bar Parada Obrigatória, in Vila Isabel, in the north zone of Rio.

Investigations indicate that the victim was shot dead in June of this year after stealing money from slot machines he had in his bars. The Bar Parada Obrigatória was once the target of a dispute between bookmakers Adilson Oliveira Coutinho, known as Adilsinho, and Bernardo Bello.

According to the police, the gang is also being investigated for the death of lawyer Rodrigo Marinho Crespo, who was shot dead near the OAB-Rio in February of this year.

One of the lines of investigation is that the defender was executed as a result of his professional activity, since he was allegedly advocating for causes that would hinder the illicit interests of the criminal organization, such as online gambling.

PMs are targets of the operation

Among the targets of today’s search operation are 13 military police officers. Two PMs were arrested in flagrante delicto for illegal use of weapons or ammunition.

In a statement, the Military Police reported that the General Inspectorate of the Corporation supports the Civil Police operation and that the agents will respond to disciplinary administrative procedures, which may result in the exclusion of the military personnel from the ranks of the corporation.

The PM also stated that the “SEPM command reiterates its unwavering commitment to transparency and condemns any crime committed by its entities, severely punishing those involved when the facts are confirmed.”

In this Thursday’s action, the police also carry out search and seizure warrants, issued by the 1st Criminal Court of the Capital, against military police officers who are involved in the death of militia member Marco Antônio Figueiredo Martins, known as Marquinho Catiri, and his security guard, Alexsandro José da Silva, in November 2022.
