A Military Police operation caused a shootout and closed Avenida Brasil, near Complexo de Israel, in the North of Rio de Janeiro.
The Rio Operations Center reported that the avenue is closed at Cidade Alta, in both directions.
The exchange of gunfire frightened public transport drivers and passengers who were passing through the region.
In a video circulating on social media, it is possible to see several people crouching down, trying to protect themselves from the shots. See below.

Rio buses reported that more than 20 lines were affected due to the closure of Avenida Brasil. “All lines that have the city center as their destination are affected,” he said in a statement.
The Fogo Cruzado Institute, which monitors incidents involving exchanges of fire in Greater Rio, reported shootings in the Cidade Alta region since shortly after 6am this Thursday.
