For many years, about 300 to be exact, the dream of countless explorers around the world has been to discover the last undiscovered part of the Earth, the North Pole. Explorers not only had to deal with extreme temperatures but also the unpredictable element of ice. On a day like today in 1909, Robert Edward Peary, after 8 attempts in 23 years, set foot for the first time where no one had set foot, something that was however much disputed. However, decades after Peary's death, navigational errors in his travel log were revealed that put the expedition a few miles short of its goal and cast doubt on who ultimately discovered the North Pole.
