The combination of the first contact with your own money and the lack of financial education can result in financial out of control. Spending without limits, buying what you don’t need, living a life you can’t afford and accumulating a huge debt: that’s exactly what Júlia Mendonça did.
The influencer owed more than BRL 80,000, but she turned around and decided to share her story on social media and help people in a similar situation. Today, she is a finance expert and digital influencer.
Guest of the 14th episode of CNN In Profit podcast, CNN Brasil Soft project, Júlia tells how she went from debtor to investor and millionaire. In the conversation led by Leandro Munhós, she also talked about her spending, the first million, where she invests her own money, participation in the reality show The Apprentice and much more.
From indebted to investor
Júlia Mendonça’s debt was not formed by necessity or by the purchase of an expensive good. According to her, the value of more than R$ 80 thousand was accumulated with small day-to-day purchases. “I ate the best and the best, I drank the best and the best, I traveled to great places. No wonder I got into debt,” she said.
When she and her husband realized that the debt had snowballed and the value had increased exponentially, they decided to pay attention to the couple’s money and pay off the debts. The two organized themselves, negotiated the amounts and paid all pending issues in two years.
“I’m very focused on what I have to do and for me it was nice to pay the bills. The months went by and I was happy to check my debt list”, reveals Júlia.
After the remarkable episode, Júlia Mendonça decided that, in addition to not having debts, she needed to start investing. For that, she enrolled in a course on investments. Mendonça said that it was at that moment when the “chip fell” and he understood where she wanted to go. Júlia specialized in finance, changed careers and started sharing her story on social media.
Tips for paying off debts
Júlia Mendonça says that there is no secret. It takes a lot of dedication to pay off debts and think strategically about which debt should be paid first. “You need to understand what the most expensive interest is and pay that amount first,” she advises.
According to the finance specialist, there are 3 pillars that need to be followed by those who are in debt. Are they:
- Understand what to pay first;
- Plan the budget – cut, decrease or replace spending;
- Make extra income.
Money cannot be a problem, money has to be the solution. If today you are in a bad situation, know that it is a period. Let’s fight and find a solution. You don’t have to want to become a millionaire, but you have to have a dignified life.”
