On alert for possible evacuation of US embassy in Sudan – US sends troops

The USA they send soldiers to his area Sudan to facilitate a possible evacuation of their embassy and the removal of its staff amid fighting between the Sudanese military and paramilitaries in Khartoum, the Pentagon announced today.

“We are sending a large number of additional forces to the area to ensure and facilitate the eventual departure from Sudan of our American embassy personnel, should circumstances warrant,” the Pentagon said in a press release, which did not specify the number of troops involved in the mission.

A senior US official who asked not to be named said later that the additional US forces would be deployed in Djibouti, a small but stable state in the Horn of Africa.

White House spokesman John Kirby said President Joe Biden ordered the preemptive deployment of military forces to be ready, adding that Biden pclosely follows the developments. Kirby added that there is no indication that Americans are being targeted, but added that it is a dangerous situation.

The best thing that can happen is for both sides to lay down their arms, observe the ceasefire and let humanitarian aid reach the people in Khartoum, Kirby said. The State Department had previously urged American citizens in Sudan to stay indoors for their own protection.

Bloody fighting has raged for ten days between the Sudanese army and paramilitaries, two warring factions led by two rival generals, mainly in the capital Khartoum. More than 300 civilians have lost their lives since Saturday.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres today called for a ceasefire for “at least three days” in Sudan on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr celebrations, which mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan for Muslims.
