Two-time European weightlifting champion, Oleksandr Peleshenko, died at the age of 30 fighting the Russian army on the Ukrainian front. The national coach of the Ukrainian weightlifting team, Viktor Slobodianyuk, in a post on Facebook, wrote the following: “War takes the best…Defending Ukraine from invaders, today, May 6, one of its top fighters died heroically sports of Ukraine, two-time champion of Europe (2016, 2017), participant of the Olympic Games in weightlifting, Oleksandr Peleshenko. My sincere condolences to the family and relatives of Oleksandr! This is a very heavy loss for the entire Ukrainian weightlifting community. Heroes don't die.” It is noted that Oleksandr Peleshenko became the European weightlifting champion in 2016 and 2017, while in 2022 he enlisted in the Ukrainian army, as Russia invaded his homeland.
