In difficult times, we must stay united, Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed, and ruled out the possibility of Germany taking an independent path from its partners in the Ukraine war. He also warned of maintaining high energy prices “for a long time”.
“It will not be easy. Prices will not fall soon – on the contrary, this problem will be there for a long time,” Mr. Scholz told about 150 people in Lübeck as part of the “Dialogue with Citizens” and assured that the income support measures will continue. “No one will be left helpless,” the chancellor stressed.
As for the federal government’s stance on the Ukraine war, Mr. Soltz said he was committed to engaging with partners and allies. “These are very serious times and a situation where we are not allowed to make a mistake. A mistake in these circumstances would be terrifying. There is no lonely path for us,” he noted.
Asked about criticism of him on the issue, the chancellor said he always wanted to “keep his feet on the ground” and was not guided by newspaper headlines or opinion polls. “The issue is what we are doing for peace and security in Europe,” he said.
But Mr. Soltz also answered questions about love, on the occasion of the recent wedding of Finance Minister Christian Lindner. “Love is the most beautiful thing in life and when two people find each other, it doesn’t take much talking,” the chancellor said.
