Officially: smartphones will have ray tracing thanks to the Samsung Exynos processor

The official Samsung account on Weibo (the Chinese equivalent of Twitter) announced that the Exynos mobile processors will support ray tracing. The company did not disclose details, but the media suggested that this technology will appear in the next flagship chipset, which should be the Exynos 2200.

According to the web, ray tracing will be provided by AMD’s graphics core based on the RDNA 2 architecture (or, more likely, its mobile variation – mRDNA 2). Earlier, insiders assumed that the blocks responsible for processing ray tracing would be removed from the graphics accelerator – they are supposedly not needed in a smartphone and are too energy-intensive. However, this has now been officially denied.

Most likely, the Exynos 2200 processor will debut along with the upcoming flagship smartphones Galaxy S22, and their presentation is expected in early 2022. It is possible that by then Samsung will have entered into agreements with some game developers to add ray tracing to their projects – now mobile games are not familiar with ray tracing. Judging by the teaser, it can be assumed that World of Tanks Blitz will receive support for this technology (but this is just a guess).
