A nurse who worked in the dialysis area of a hospital decided to donate one of her kidneys while she was alive, because, with great sadness, she saw how one of her first patients died without receiving a transplant.
For some time, Emily McIntire was physically preparing to be a donor, but then she developed a friendship with one of her patients, so she decided to donate her kidney to him. Some time later, they fell in love and are now engaged to be married.
In an interview for Insider, Emily told her incredible story, revealing that the death of one of her first patients planted the seeds of wanting to be a donor. Later, she chose Jeff, one of her patients who was terrified of needles, to make an anonymous donation.
I knew this was my chance: I would donate my kidney to Jeff. My first step was to talk to my employer to make sure there was no conflict of interest; he was my patient after all.
When they told her that there was no problem for her to be a donor, all the compatibility tests were carried out, but due to the difference in the size of the organs of both, another donor had to be found to make an exchange, so she ended up donating to him. the kidney to a 21-year-old boy and another man was Jeff’s donor.
Although his donation was anonymous, the hospital arranged a Zoom call for those involved in the process to meet. At that moment, Jeff was very surprised to see his nurse, with whom he arranged to go out for coffee. After that first outing, they continued to see each other until love arose between them.
We met for coffee and haven’t stopped talking since. We walk together often, something Jeff loves but couldn’t do when he had kidney failure. About 15 months after the transplant, we got engaged. We will get married in October. People tell us that our story sounds like a movie.
Her story is very special, but beyond Emily finding love by becoming a donor, she hopes her story can inspire us to dare to be a living donor.
