The number of people arrested on suspicion of starting vegetation fires in the interior of São Paulo has risen to three. According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), one person was arrested in Porto Ferreira this Monday (25).
Over the weekend, two people had already been arrested in São José do Rio Preto and Batatais, in the northwest of the state.
Also on Monday, the state’s Civil Defense reported that all fires had been controlled and there were no more active fires in São Paulo. However, the government maintained the maximum alert for fires in 48 municipalities.
The work of the crisis office and the outpost that was set up in Ribeirão Preto also continues.
With the improvement in the situation regarding fire outbreaks, all highways that were affected by the fires are now open. The Department of Highways (DER) and Artesp are monitoring the situation to take any action due to possible fire and smoke outbreaks that may hinder visibility.
So far, 68 people have been victims of the forest fires, with 66 injured and 2 dead. The interior region had 24 simultaneous fire sites on Saturday morning (24). 48 municipalities are still on high alert for fires.
According to the government, the Civil Police are mobilized to investigate all cases of arson in the state, especially those that occur in regions affected by the fires. Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) declared a state of emergency for 180 days in 45 municipalities in São Paulo due to the occurrence of forest fires between August 4 and 24.
The Federal Police will investigate the causes of the fires. The director of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, reported that two investigations will investigate the possibility of crime in the regions of Rio Preto and Ribeirão Preto.
