Iran reinforced its right to enrich uranium and accused the Trump government of submitting contradictory signals after statements from the US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.
“Iran’s enrichment (program) (program) is a real and genuine issue, and we are ready to build confidence in possible concerns, but the issue of enrichment is not negotiable,” Iranian Foreign Minister ABBAS ARACHCHI, reporters on Wednesday (17), told state TV.
Witkoff seemed to contradict the US position this week. He had told Fox News that Iran should not need to enrich uranium above 3.67% to run a civil program, seeming to accept that Tehran would maintain a nuclear program.
Then, on Tuesday (15), he took a more extreme position, posting in X that “Iran should stop and eliminate its nuclear enrichment and weaponry program.”
“We hear contradictory and conflicting positions, and Mr. Witkoff has spoken in many ways so far,” said Araye. “The real positions will be clarified at the negotiation table.”
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baqaei, opined on Thursday in the X, comparing the change of position from the US to “a professional lack and an unfair act in football.”
“In diplomacy, any such change (driven by hawks that cannot understand the logic/art of making common sense agreements) could simply risk that any opening crumbly,” he wrote. “This can be perceived as a lack of seriousness, much less in good faith… we are still in test mode.”
A second round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US is expected for Saturday (19).
