Norwegian PM calls on Putin to end war in Ukraine

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gar Stere had a one-hour telephone conversation today with Russian President Vladimir Putin during which the two leaders discussed the invasion of Ukraine, the Norwegian Prime Minister said in a statement.

“I asked the president to urgently end the war in Ukraine, withdraw Russian troops and ensure humanitarian access,” Stere said.

“Our expectations for what could be achieved are very limited, but we have to try everything in the situation we are in today,” he added.

The telephone conversation between the two leaders took place at the initiative of Norway after Stere first discussed it with allies in Europe and the USA, his office clarifies.

Norway, a NATO member, borders Russia in the Arctic.

Russia describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation” aimed at demilitarizing and “de-Naziizing” its neighbor. Kyiv and the West say Russia has launched an unprovoked offensive war.
