A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the northern Arctic archipelago of Svalbard today, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said. Police said there were no reports of injuries or damage.
The quake struck 725 km north of Svalbard and had a focal depth of 2 km, the EMSC said.
“We have not received any reports of any incidents,” a police spokesman for Svalbard’s governor told Reuters.
He added that there are usually “many ships” around the island, but he does not know how many were there at that time.
“So far we have no incoming reports about this,” a spokesman for the Northern Norway Rescue Service told Reuters.
The main settlement in Svalbard, Longyearbyen, is located in the central part of the archipelago.
