North Korea said on Saturday (13) that it “denounces in the strongest possible terms” NATO’s statement alleging that Pyongyang is helping Russia in the war against Ukraine. The country also denounced the United States’ efforts to expand its policy of alliances with Asian countries.
NATO leaders on Wednesday (10) accused North Korea and Iran of supporting the Russian war by providing direct military support to Moscow. The summit also reinforced the intention to add Ukraine as a member of the alliance and took a stronger stance on Chinese support for Russia.
“The ‘Washington summit statement’ prepared and made public on July 10 serves to prove that the US and NATO have been reduced to a tool for confrontation, and that they pose the gravest threat to world peace and security,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman was quoted as saying by the state-run KCNA news agency.
The spokesman said the US attempt to expand military blocs with NATO countries and partners in Asia, including South Korea and Japan, was “the terrible source of a serious threat to regional peace, increasing the precariousness of the international security environment and giving rise to an arms race.”
On the sidelines of the summit, South Korea and the United States outlined guidelines for establishing an integrated extended deterrence system on the Korean Peninsula to counter North Korea’s nuclear and military threats.
North Korea’s Defense Ministry criticized the guidelines as a “reckless provocation,” prompting Pyongyang to beef up its own nuclear deterrent.
“It would be incomprehensible for anyone to imagine the price that will be paid if this warning is ignored,” the ministry said in an official statement.
