Flagship Samsung Galaxy smartphones have long used two different chipsets depending on which regions they are sold in. However, the Galaxy S23 series seems to be the exception. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the South Korean manufacturer plans to exclusively use Snapdragon platforms in these smartphones, regardless of the market. For example, for the Galaxy S22 series, Qualcomm supplied about 70% of the chips, the remaining 30% are chips of its own production.
Samsung has historically used Snapdragon platforms in the US and several other major markets, and Exynos in Europe and Asia. The decision to ditch its own chips is most likely due to the fact that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has better performance than the upcoming flagship Exynos 2300 chip. Qualcomm will gain a larger share of the high-end Android market this year.
Back in 2020, Samsung fans created a petition demanding that the company stop using Exynos chipsets. The petition has garnered tens of thousands of signatures. Users have complained about lack of performance, less battery life, and heating issues. Samsung said in a response that Exynos and Snapdragon processors undergo the same real-world tests to ensure consistent and optimal performance throughout the smartphone’s lifecycle.
There were rumors that Samsung abandoned plans for the Exynos 2200 due to performance issues, but the company released the chipset anyway. Its power was at the level of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, although it had some software bugs and problems in games and applications. Earlier this year, Samsung said it plans to make the new chipset unique to Galaxy smartphones. What this uniqueness lies in is still not known.
