Nicosia ‘dusts off’ the information about the annexation of the occupied territories

Turkish movements have been under close observation lately, with Nicosia thoroughly investigating the information about the intention to announce the annexation of the occupied territories.

The information so far, as reported by government sources in Nicosia, does not confirm the rumors that have been circulating lately. Publications also that speak of Erdoğan’s July 19 trip to Iran reinforce the view that there is not going to be such a serious announcement from the Turkish side without the presence of the Turkish President. At the same time, however, there is intense movement on the part of the Cypriot Government, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs being on alert.

Already, as information from the Cypriot “Filelefthero” reports, preventive moves have been made mainly towards the EU, as the occupied territories are European territory.

He wants “equal” cooperation

The Turkish side continues to operate in the logic of the two states and this is reflected in the recent letter of the occupying leader Ersin Tatar.

According to the newsletter of the Cypriot Press and Information Office in an announcement on the website of the so-called presidency, the occupying leader refers to the content of his letter and the proposals he submitted.

“We submitted to the UN Officials our second comprehensive proposals for cooperation that we prepared as a T/C side to be delivered to the Greek Cypriot leader Anastasiades through the UN Secretary General Mr. Antonio Guterres.

Erdogan is not coming to the occupied territories on July 20

In addition to the proposal for cooperation in four important areas that I submitted on July 1, 2022, I have also submitted through the UN our comprehensive proposals on the issues of demining Cyprus and combating irregular migration, which were prepared with the valuable contribution of our interested institutions. , he says and adds that he once again put on the carpet “our determination on the issue of clearing both sides of the land mines that are a potential threat to the lives of our people”. As he says, there are currently 29 suspected minefields in Cyprus, which are also mentioned in the UN reports. “As you remember, as the Turkish Cypriot side we had submitted our proposals for this purpose in the years 2014, 2015 and 2018, but we had received a negative response from the Greek Cypriot side.

In the first proposal we made today, which was prepared with intensive efforts of our concerned institutions, there are three minefields under the control of the military side in the dead zone, starting from the dead zone and one under our control. We mentioned that we are ready to clear the entire island of mines”, he notes and concludes that he told President Anastasiades “that our staff that we authorized are ready to work simultaneously and on the basis of proportionality on both sides with the mechanism that will be established with participation competent personnel on the basis of the equality of the two sides and in equal numbers under the supervision of the UN Peacekeeping Force”, he concludes.

Ersin Tatar also notes that “as a second area of cooperation, I proposed to fight together the ongoing issue of informal migration, which on the one hand constitutes a great humanitarian drama and on the other is a global problem. I submitted our comprehensive proposal that demonstrates that we are ready for cooperation on the issue of combating informal immigration which negatively affects Cyprus and both sides, with a cooperation mechanism that will be set up with the participation mainly of the “Immigration Police”, the “Ministry of the Interior”, the “General Prosecutor’s Office” and other competent representatives from both sides under the supervision of the UN. Our proposal in question contains, together with a discussion of the reasons for informal migration, combating human smuggling in this sense and at the same time cooperation on border security issues both at sea and on land.”

The occupying leader also notes that “as a document that will serve as a guide for the two sides here, I pointed to the UN convention of July 28, 1951, which regulates the status of immigrants, and I noted that it is a condition that the cooperation mechanism works in harmony with this convention which we foresee”.

Concluding, he notes that he emphasized how the positive approach of the Greek Cypriot side will contribute from the point of view of the preparation of positive ground and to the political process.

Erdogan is not going to Cyprus after all
