NFT Collector Jokingly Lost Nearly $150,000

A large holder of Franklinisbored collectible tokens lost 100 ether worth about $148,665 as a result of a playful bet on the domain he registered from the Ethereum Name Service.

Collector created domain name stop-doing-fake-bids-its-honestly-lame-my-guy.eth using a backup account, and then bidding for 100 ether from his primary address to acquire that domain.

In this way, the owner of the valuable NFT Bored Ape Yacht Club was going to play a joke on the ENS Bids Twitter bot, which provides information to users about large bets on domains. Some time later, the domain received a request to purchase it for 1.9 ether ($2,900). The joker agreed and sold the NFT, forgetting to close his order to buy the collectible token for 100 Ether. Frustrated, Franklinisbored wrote that, in fact, he bought an NFT from himself and lost $148,665 in Ether in the process.

“I enjoyed my domain sale joke and told all my followers about it, but I forgot to cancel my 100 ETH bet to buy the domain back. This is really the stupidity of the century, ”the collector criticized his mistake.

Franklinisbored dismissed his subscribers’ suspicions that he “maybe cared”, meaning the automated bot accepted the 100 ETH request before the person could cancel it. The collector stated that it was entirely his own fault:

“I had enough time to cancel my own offer, instead I went back to Twitter and started showing off my idea. I even sent 1.9 WETH back to the user who bought/returned it to me. This is a mistake for which I am fully responsible and deserve the strongest censure.”

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a service that allows users to create domains in the form of NFTs that are linked to crypto wallets. They are used to identify addresses instead of complex sets of letters and numbers. In 2021, the project developers announced their intention to launch a voting token. In their opinion, the token will help make project management more decentralized.
