In an interview with CNN the teacher of science of the religion of PUC of São Paulo JORGE CLÁUDIO RIBEIRO stated that the next Pope should “harvest what Francis planted”
According to Ribeiro, Francis’ successor will probably be someone in tune with the work philosophy, conception of church and theological view of the deceased pontiff. “Francisco advanced to where the church left, to where the church would support,” explained the expert.
Influence and Challenges of the Papacy
The teacher pointed out that the papacy represents a “Soft Power” a significant force of influence on the global scenario, although it has no military power. “He gathers 1 billion and 400 million Catholics, ”said Ribeiro, emphasizing the breadth of papal influence.
However, the expert also pointed out the challenges faced by Francis during his pontificate, including the opposition of conservative church sectors, especially in the United States.
“There are many tensions too, especially from Catholics and hierarchy,” he noted.
Expectations for the new pontiff
As for expectations for the next Pope, Ribeiro believes it is not essential that he is as charismatic as Francis.
The important thing, according to him, is that the new leader of the Catholic Church is able to continue the guidelines and directions established by his predecessor.
“I imagine that the tendency for a new Pope would possibly be someone in tune with the philosophy of work, the philosophy of life, the conception of church, the theological conception of Francis,” concluded the professor.
