New Zealand: Torrential rains for 4th day – Hundreds of residents flee their homes

Cascading rains continue to hit parts of it for the fourth consecutive day New Zealand resulting in hundreds of residents being forced to move away from their homes, as rivers overflowed and waters caused ground instability.

Nelson, on the north coast of the South Island, is the worst hit. More than 400 houses were evacuated there and some were declared uninhabitable due to the rains.

“The damage I saw in Nelson is sad and I believe it will take years to restore”Tasman Civil Defense Nelson officer Alec Louverdis told a news conference.

“As we drove there there were landslides everywhere”he added as reported by the Athens News Agency.

The Metservice said Nelson had received 172mm of rain since Tuesday, more than double the average for August. Another 190mm of rain was expected in the hills near Nelson for the next day.

Its residents have been advised to conserve water due to problems in the city’s water supply system.

SOS from Civil Protection: It asks people to avoid the beaches

The Civil Protection service also warned people to avoid beaches, as waves could reach up to three meters on some shores.

New Zealand Armed Forces personnel are assisting with evacuations and flood relief.

The storms these come after weeks of unusual humidity in the country.

Heavy rain has also hit New Zealand’s North Island in the past 24 hours, cutting off some towns, flooding roads and homes and forcing people from their homes.

Northland County Civil Protection said in a Facebook post that flooding was expected to recede as the tide receded later today, but noted that some roads remained cut off from the rest of the network.

A heavy rain warning remains in effect until midnight today.
