New Year's Eve: find out what the weather will be like at the turn of the year

Storms and the formation of an extratropical cyclone should mark the final stretch of 2023, according to meteorology. This is what Maria Clara Sassaki, Climatempo spokesperson, said in an interview with CNN this Monday (25).

The tendency is for the typical summer weather, which started last Friday, to be very characteristic across the country: hot days, and rain with the possibility of lightning and even hail in the afternoon.

At the turn of December 31st to January 1st, there is a possibility of rain along the entire coast of the country, with particular intensity in the Northeast and Southeast.

“There are warnings for the South region for the formation of an extratropical cyclone in the next few hours, and it is a matter of time before it reaches the Southeast. But the Midwest, Northeast and North also have some warnings for heavy rains,” he said.

For this Tuesday (26), the storm risk map shows the following scenario:

• Attention: almost the entire State of São Paulo, all of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo; central strip of Mato Grosso do Sul; large part of Minas Gerais (except the North of the State); Goiás to the Federal District (including Brasília); large part of Mato Grosso; Rondônia; Roraima and a strip that runs from the coast of Belém (PA) to Alagoas
• Alert: region of Campinas (SP), passing through part of the south of Minas Gerais to the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais; extreme north of Rio de Janeiro (on the border with MG, especially) and south of Espírito Santo; a strip between the north of Mato Grosso do Sul, the south of Goiás and the south of Mato Grosso; extreme east of Rondônia; all of Acre; eastern strip of Amazonas

“The rains are expected to be very heavy, and that is why there is a special state of attention for those regions where there are landslides, such as Rio de Janeiro and the coast of São Paulo”, warned Maria Clara.

The Climatempo spokesperson states that there is a possibility of the same scenario repeating between December 30th and January 1st. The tendency is for the sun to appear again in much of the country on Wednesday (27) and Thursday (28), with rain returning from Friday (29).

Above average temperatures

Temperatures will be above average in all regions of Brazil, as Maria Clara Sassaki told CNN and new heat waves are not ruled out.

“We still have the influence of El Niño, other areas of the ocean with temperatures well above normal, a lot of energy in the atmosphere, which has a higher temperature, so here in Brazil all States will have thermometers at or above average”, he said.

There is special attention to the Mato Grosso region and the North of the country, because the amount of rain should be lower than the expected average.

For now, there is no sign that new heat waves could hit the country, according to Climatempo. It is possible to predict temperature rises up to 15 days in advance.
