On the 45th anniversary of the launch of RisiKo!, the Spin Master publishing house presents a novelty to thrill new generations of players in the name of strategy and play with friends. It arrives in fact RisiKo! Antarctica: a single dashboard inspired by the sixth continent of the planisphere, the most mysterious and important in the world. With the new dashboard they make their debut two brand new game modeswho try to reinvent a great classic of fun with friends and family.
Not just an update but the first update and the first spin-off: RisiKo! Antarctica is indeed the first expansion in the story of the legendary strategy board game, which adds the sixth continent to the hemisphere of the classic game, creating new dynamics and completely changing the logic of a title that has fascinated millions of Italians since its launch, dating back to 1977. Inspired by the game French La Conquète du monde – invented by French director Albert Lamorisse to teach his children geography – with the RisiKo expansion! takes players to discover a new continent to explore that adds to the famous board territories. Some of these have become true icons of popular culture, such as the remote Russian territories of Yakutia and of Kamchatka.
RisiKo! Antarctica is also there first two-player version of RisiKo! This is a completely new game in which you can try your hand simply by flipping the board. The goal is conquer the 42 territories of the Antarctic continent in a two-way challenge. From the Land of Wilkes to that of Queen Elizabeth, from the Weddell Ice Pack to that of Ross to the most unexplored point, obviously the South Pole, the Antarctic continent is ready to welcome the colorful and peaceful armies of the two adversaries. Because as Article 1 of the Washington Treaty of 1959 states: Antarctica must be populated and exploited only for peaceful purposes. As is known, the installation of military bases, fortifications, military maneuvers and the testing of any type of weapon is prohibited. However, the treaty does not prevent the use of military equipment for scientific or other peaceful purposes, such as playing RisiKo!
«Risiko is a strategy game born in Italy in 1977, inspired by a French game of the 1950s invented by a director to teach his children geography. Despite referring to the logic of attack, defense and conquest, his’game value” leverages on concepts very far from a war dimension, offering an extraordinary playful experience among friends, engaged in challenges that require intelligence, fair play and time to spend together – he explains Ben RathboneSpin Master vice president of design-games – when we decided to launch an expansion of RisiKo we have recovered the spirit with which Lamorisse had invented the original game and we wondered which territory we could have incorporated into the historic bridge. We have chosen to enter the least known continent of the planet, the most unexplored, the one richest in hidden resources and vast lands covered with ice but also inhabited by researchers, scientists, doctors and even teachers … and penguins, whales, a priceless natural heritage . It is also the continent to which the future of the Earth is linked because we know how important it is to preserve its climate and biodiversity. And so we hope that many children and adults playing with this new version will become curious about Antarctica and that it will become for them what Kamchatka is for many RisiKo enthusiasts ».
The Antarctic continent fascinated the Spin Master management so much that they decided to dedicate an ad hoc game to it, the first two-player version of RisiKo. A real spin-off in which Antarctica is the protagonist, with 42 territories, 3 scientific stations and new objectives, “to bring a 45-year-old tradition to new generations of players, which is part of Italian history and customs” adds Rathbone. They are not rhetorical or exaggerated phrases: only in the last year RisiKo! it has in fact sold over 100 thousand piecesand in 45 years of history it has involved about 10 million Italians. With hundreds of regional and national tournaments organized from the 1980s to today, 2,500,000 matches played in the digital version, about thirty RisiKo! Official clubs scattered throughout the Italian territory from North to South, it is undeniably one of the most famous games in the country, perhaps with Monopoli the most famous, and the one with the strongest and most active community, so much so that the word risiko it is used daily in common language and in the media as a synonym for strategy, difficulty in interlocking positions and deciding on moves, diplomatic negotiations.
