New Brazilian aircraft maker starts project with hybrid engine

New Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, Desaer announced this week the launch of the ATL-100H project, an aircraft with hybrid propulsion composed of two conventional turboprops and a pair of electric motors.

The development of the aircraft with auxiliary electric motors has the collaboration of magniX, a company based in the state of Washington, in the United States, and today one of the main references in the development of specific electric motors for aviation.

“When we started the hybrid airplane project, we looked for suppliers that had experience in electric motors and we found magniX, which is the company with the greatest know-how in this area. magniX will supply the entire electric powertrain for the ATL-100H, including the batteries,” said Evandro Fileno, CEO of Desaer, in an interview with CNN Brasil Business.

Fileno confirmed that the hybrid model will have the same capacity as the ATL-100, which is designed to carry up to 19 passengers or 2,500 kg of cargo and flight range in the range of 2,000 km.

“The big difference in the hybrid model will be the efficiency and reduced cost of operation. We expect the ATL-100H to save between 25% and 40% on fuel, depending on the range of travel.”

The electric motor proposed to equip the ATL-100H is the magni350, with 469 horsepower. A version of this propellant has already been tested on seaplanes by Harbor Air Seaplanes, a Canadian airline that is expected to start the first commercial transport service on electric planes this year.

magniX is also participating in the Alice project, from Israel’s Eviation, and is developing an electric motorized conversion package for Cessna Caravan models.

“The implications of creating the ATL-100H are long-term and will have a positive impact on environmental sustainability,” said Simon Roads, head of sales at magniX. “The ATL 100H and future versions will enable operators to achieve their carbon emission reduction targets while maintaining the low operating costs and operating flexibility offered by Desaer’s ATL family of aircraft.”

According to the CEO of Desaer, the presentation of the ATL-100H should take place within 18 to 24 months.

“The configuration of the hybrid plane is almost the same as the conventional model. One project does not delay or make the other unfeasible. The two projects are running side by side. However, due to the greater complexity of the hybrid model and the certification processes, it is not yet possible to announce flight dates or product launches.”

Fileno further said that the development of the hybrid model is a “springboard” for Desaer to design an all-electric aircraft. “In the future we plan to have an all-electric aircraft, but current battery technology still does not allow us to achieve optimal safety and performance requirements. The hybrid model will help Desaer improve this area.”

Factory in Araxá

Today based in the aeronautical hub of São José dos Campos (SP), Embraer’s hometown, Desaer will soon have a new home.

In 2020, the company announced the choice of Araxá, in the interior of Minas Gerais, to house its factory, where the ATL-100 and ATL-300 series models will be produced. According to Fileno, the plant located at Romeu Zema airport will also have administrative and engineering offices.

“The construction of the factory in Araxá will begin this year. Both the ATL-100 and the ATL-300 will be produced at an initial rate of four aircraft per month”, predicts the CEO of Desaer.
