New adaptation of “The Color Purple” gets a date to arrive on streaming; check out

The film directed by Blitz Bazawule tells the story of Celie (Fantasia Barrino), an African-American woman living in the southern United States at the beginning of the 20th century. She tries to overcome the trauma left by her father and husband's abuse over the years and, to do so, she will count on the support and strength of a group of women who build a sisterhood.

Before becoming a musical, “The Color Purple” had already hit the big screen in 1985, directed by Steven Spielberg and at the time, it received 11 Oscar nominations, but ended up winning none. Oprah Winfrey played Sofia, who is now played by Danielle Brooks, and the protagonist Celie was played by Whoopi Goldberg. Quincy Jones was also the music producer for this version.

All adaptations are based on the novel of the same name by writer Alice Walker, which won the Pullitzer for Fiction in 1983.
