“Never insult the Poles again,” says Polish Prime Minister to Zelensky

Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told Volodymyr Zelensky never to “insult the Poles” again after the Ukrainian president suggested the neighboring country was making a spectacle of the grain export dispute.

Morawiecki hit back at Zelensky after he made a veiled criticism of Poland at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly this week, saying the dispute was “political theater” and that “some of our friends in Europe” “made terror over the grain.”

“I want to tell President Zelensky never to insult the Poles again, as he did recently during his speech at the UN,” Morawiecki said.

“The Polish people will never allow this to happen, and defending the name of Poland is not only my duty and honor, but also the most important task of the Polish government,” added the Prime Minister.

Morawiecki’s comments risk deepening divisions between two countries that have previously been close allies and united against the Russian invasion.

Tensions between the nations have been rising in recent weeks over a ban on Ukrainian grain, initially implemented earlier this year by several European Union (EU) countries to protect the livelihoods of local farmers concerned they could be harmed by the low price. of cereals.

The EU announced plans to lift the ban last week, but Poland – along with Hungary and Slovakia – declared it would maintain it, provoking protests from Ukraine, which took legal action against the three countries, and subsequently the Zelensky’s comments at the UN.
