The streaming giant launched a new subtitle option on Thursday (24) that allows the viewer to watch content with Subtitles in the original language that show only the spoken dialogue without audio tips according to a press release.

Prior to this new option, subscribers who chose to watch content with original language subtitles chose the deaf and hearing impairment option (SDH/CC), which includes dialogue subtitles and audio tips – think of “telephone buzz” or “dramatic” notations – as well as music titles and/or speakers.

This new feature will be available not only in English, but in All the languages that Netflix offers besides the SDH/CC option. In addition, viewers can also customize the source where subtitles are displayed .

According to a 2023 YouGov survey, almost 40% of US respondents preferred to watch TV in a language that speak of activated subtitles, making Netflix’s new feature a more than timely option for the public.

According to the study, those who use subtitles cited two main factors for this: to improve their general understanding and help them understand accents.

Netflix had already observed its viewers’ consumption habits before announcing the new feature of subtitles only for dialogues, increasing the number of films and series that support SDH options and audio descriptions (AD).

The streaming service said that almost half of all hours of display on its US platform happen with activated hidden subtitles or subtitles.

The new feature of subtitles with only dialogues debuted with the fifth and last season of the suspense series “You”, whose episodes were released on April 24, and will be available to all new Netflix originals from now on.
