Netanyahu suspends minister who suggested using nuclear weapon in Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suspended a far-right minister from participating in government meetings after he suggested that dropping a nuclear bomb on Gaza was “one way” of dealing with the crisis.

Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu was asked this Sunday morning (5) on Radio Kol Berama, a religious radio station, whether a nuclear weapon should be used in Gaza, to which Eliyahu replied: “This is one way.”

He later said he did not intend his response to be taken literally.

“The minister’s statements [Amichay] Eliyahu are not based on reality,” Netanyahu wrote on social media.

“Israel and the Defense Forces are operating in accordance with the highest standards of international law to avoid harming innocent people. We will continue to do so until we win.”

The Prime Minister’s office informed the CNN that Netanyahu suspended Eliyahu from participating in government meetings until further notice.

Eliyahu defended his remarks, writing on social media: “It is clear to all sensible people that the statement about the atom [bomba nuclear] It’s metaphorical.”

However, the minister suggested developing “a strong and disproportionate response to terrorism”.

Eliyahu is part of the far-right party Otzma Yehudit led by Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Neither he nor Ben Gvir are members of the war cabinet.

Israel has never officially admitted that it possesses nuclear weapons.
