The hostage agreement signed with Hamas does not include the “release of assassins” by Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this Wednesday (22), when releasing more details of the resolution.
Most Israelis celebrated the agreement, and Netanyahu said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and security institutions fully support it.
“They made it clear yesterday at the government meeting that the security of our forces will be maintained during the days of pause”, highlighted the prime minister during a press conference.
However, there is concern among some authorities that perpetrators of fatal attacks against Israelis may be on the list of Palestinians who should be released from Israeli prisons.
The vast majority of Palestinians listed as eligible for release are male teenagers between the ages of 16 and 18 – considered children as defined by the United Nations – although some are as young as 14.
Around 33 hostages who could be freed are women, according to the CNN.
Also according to the prime minister, the Red Cross will also be able to visit and offer medical assistance to hostages who will remain under the control of Hamas.
Netanyahu attributed the deal’s success to the combination of Israel’s “massive and uninterrupted military pressure” on Hamas and the “strong” diplomatic pressure the government had been applying to free its citizens.
“We conducted difficult negotiations, we fought to improve the agreement”, highlighted Netanyahu.
He said he spoke with US President Joe Biden this Wednesday and thanked him for “acting, at my request, in the face of the mediators, to achieve a significant improvement in the agreement, and such an improvement was in fact achieved”.
“I believe this combination [de esforços diplomáticos e militares] will allow the release of additional hostages in the next phases”, he considered.
During the truce, the IDF will “prepare for the continuation” of the war against Hamas, Netanyahy warned. “The war continues and will continue until we achieve all our objectives,” he said.
