Nearly 100,000 ChatGPT accounts found on darknet

Group-IB experts have identified 101,134 ChatGPT chatbot accounts in the logs that cybercriminals put up for sale on the darknet. This was stated by the press service of the Singaporean company in blog. According to the researchers, the data was able to be stolen using viruses that hunt for victim information on personal computers.

Group-IB also notes the growing trend of using a chatbot in the workplace. Analysts warned that by default, ChatGPT keeps a history of user requests and responses. This means that the attackers who stole the logs see the entire correspondence of the victim with the chatbot. The information received by malefactors can subsequently be used for the purposeful attacks against the companies and their employees, emphasized in Group-IB. Beginning in January 2023, tens of thousands of ChatGPT logs appear monthly on darknet forums.

Raccoon turned out to be the most active virus (it stole over 75,000 data). In second place are Vidar (almost 13,000) and Redline (over 6,500). Group-IB also found out that most thefts are committed in the Asia-Pacific region. India (over 12,000 accounts), Pakistan (over 9,000) and Brazil took the first place in the countries that were hit around ChatGPT.

Group-IB advises users to regularly update their passwords and implement two-factor authentication to reduce the risk of confidential data theft.
