The Brazilian Navy resumed at 7am this Thursday (26) the search for those missing after the collapse of the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge, between Tocantins and Maranhão. Until now, 11 people are still wanted .
Search teams recovered two more victims’ bodies on Wednesday afternoon (25) and the death toll rose to 6 people. After that, the searches were stopped at night.
According to the Navy, initially, at 6 am, the Estreito Hydroelectric Plant started to reduce the water flow from the dam. Next, new water analyzes will be carried out to detect agents harmful to divers and searches for the location of submerged vehicles will be resumed using “SideScan Sonar”.
The dives are scheduled to restart at 8am.
The Navy has 52 soldiers, in addition to 20 who participate remotely in Belém (PA) in the planning and logistics of the operation. The Military Fire Departments of Maranhão, Pará and Tocantins also work together with the Navy to search the accident site. There is no forecast for these activities to end.
On Tuesday (24), the Federal Police began an investigation to determine who was responsible for the collapse of the bridge. The investigations are carried out by the PF superintendencies in Maranhão and Tocantins, with the help of experts.
The six deaths already confirmed were:
- Anisio Padilha Soares, 43 years old;
- Silvana dos Santos Rocha Soares, 53 years old;
- Lorena Rodrigues Ribeiro, 25 years old;
- Lorrane Cidronio de Jesus, 11 years old;
- Kecio Francisco Santos Lopes, 42 years old;
- Andreia Maria de Sousa, 45 years old.

The only one rescued alive, so far, was Jairo Silva Rodrigues, 36 years old. He was found by members of the public with a broken leg and taken to Hospital Estreito, in Maranhão.

The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge, which connects the city of Aguiarnópolis, in Tocantins, and the city of Estreito, in Maranhão, collapsed last Sunday afternoon (22), on the BR-226 (TO) highway, over the Tocantins River.
Three trucks carrying 22,000 liters of agricultural pesticides and 76 tons of sulfuric acid, a corrosive chemical, fell into the river.
Contamination of the river is investigated by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF). The causes of the accident are being investigated by the authorities.
