Navy begins construction of nuclear submarine

The General Directorate of Nuclear and Technological Development of the Brazilian Navy will hold this Wednesday (4) a qualification ceremony for the conventionally armed submarine with nuclear propulsion, known as SCPN. The event will be at the Itaguaí Naval Complex (CNI), in Rio de Janeiro.

According to the Navy, this qualification section will make it possible to assess the capacity, unique in the southern hemisphere, of building this model of vessel.

The cutting of the first plate, a significant milestone in the submarine’s construction process, represents the beginning of the construction of the structure that makes up the so-called Qualification Section, a stage responsible for ensuring that engineers, technicians and workers can carry out their activities in the testing phase.

It certifies that all processes meet specifications and have the level of quality necessary for approval and authorization to begin construction of the submarine’s hull.

The Navy states that the characteristics of this submarine model increase Brazil’s ability to protect and patrol its vast maritime reserves, contributing to guaranteeing and protecting national interests

“The SCPN will contribute to the different challenges for the country, as it is a naval asset that demands high technology and brings together the complexity inherent in the design of a submarine, in addition to the challenges inherent in the development of specific nuclear technology”, he highlights.

Currently, only six countries have nuclear submarines: the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China and India.
