NATO: Rumors to extend Stoltenberg’s term until April 2024

The NATO appears ready to extend his term as secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg until April 2024 because of his “outstanding achievements” and to ensure the stability of the military alliance as the war in Ukraine continues.

This is reported by an article in the German newspaper, Welt am Sonntag, speaking of informal agreement of the members of the North Atlantic Alliance to be announced in the coming weeksas they want to give him the chance to chair the NATO 75th anniversary summit in April 2024 in Washington.

However, Oana Lungescu, NATO representative, replied that the secretary general does not seek to have his term of office extended and will leave the position in the fall.

“General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg’s term has been extended three times, serving a total of almost nine years”Lungescu explained.

“The secretary general’s term comes to an end in October this year and he has no intention of asking for an extension”he added.

His term was extended last year in March until September 2023, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine.
