The veteran NASA Astronaut Don Pettit who traveled to space four times, returned to the land of the International Space Station on Saturday night (19). Pettit will turn 70 this Sunday (20).
The scientist invented the first patented object in space-called Capillary Beverag, Space Cup or Zero-G glass, which makes it easier to drink liquids in the absence of gravity-and is also a celebrated astrophotographer known for capturing unique views of the cosmos.
“One of the things I like to do with my astrophotography is to have a composition and a different perspective from the geocentric, usually showing a terrestrial horizon with the atmosphere on the edge, the limbo, and then some kind of astronomy, astrophotography, for that,” Pettit of the space station said during a Interview on April 3 with astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson.
“The earth is incredibly beautiful when its feet are firmly planted on the floor, and it is beautiful of space,” said Pettit. “And it’s hard to say what is more beautiful. I think it’s because space is a unique opportunity we look for the beauty of being in orbit. If we had people living a life in orbit, when they came down to earth, they would probably think that was the most beautiful perspective they’ve ever seen.”
Pettit takes his photos from the space station summit, a favorite location of the crew members due to their seven windows that provide a view to the earth.
See, in the gallery above, some of his most unforgettable views on what it is like to live in space, which he has captured in the last seven months.
