Naples, Federica, a graduate, wins the garbage collector contest: “I’m very happy”

To win one of the 500 garbage jobs in Asia in Naples, more than 26,000 people had sent the application to participate in the competition. 1232 were university graduates.

One of them is Federica Castiglia, who won the contest in the company of the Municipality and has a degree in Optics and Optometry. She is delighted, as she explains her to Republic, to finally have «a real and stable job and, then, let’s face it: it’s a permanent job that gives ample guarantees. And I find nothing particular in a graduate who, as a job, freely chooses to be a garbage man». For her it is abouta work of great dignity. And then having won this competition and having conquered a permanent position gives me greater peace of mind. At 24, I suffered from still weighing on my parents’ shoulders. It’s frustrating not being able to make yourself independent. I must say that years of study have not paid off».

Graduated from 2021, she chose Optics «after attending a lesson that impressed me I enrolled and graduated on time. Believe me: I really put a lot of effort into it, but then finding a job was difficult». The only opportunities presented to her were to «apprenticeship contracts, without any guarantee or perspective. Instead, now I’m in a safe place, where rights are respected and the pay is consistent with the working hours. Asia represents a certainty for my future».

With her first salary, Federica Castiglia will buy a car. “I’ll take it with the automatic transmission. Because it’s more comfortable in traffic, it’s a small dream that I can now make come true».

The new job also pleases the parents of the young doctor. “My father is a retired policeman, my mother a housewife. They are happy that I have found a real job and that I am now independent of them. We celebrated”.
