The Speaker of the United States House, Nancy Pelosi said her husband is “fine” but is in a “long” recovery after he was attacked during a break-in at the couple’s San Francisco home.
“He knows he has to control himself. He is such a gentleman that he is not complaining,” Pelosi told Anderson Cooper of CNN in his first interview since the attack.
Paul Pelosi was attacked with a hammer by an attacker late last month, officials said. The intruder was looking for the mayor, according to court documents.
Paul Pelosi suffered a blow to the head and had to undergo surgery.
Pelosi said the operation “was a success, but it’s only part of the recovery from a drastic head injury.”
“It takes time,” she said, reflecting on the road ahead.
Describing her husband’s head injury, Pelosi said good news came when doctors “told us that he hadn’t punctured his brain, which could be deadly.”
Pelosi said her husband is concerned about the emotional impact of the attack.
“He is so concerned about the traumatic effect on our children and grandchildren, and we are concerned about the traumatic effect on him,” she said.
Asked if she talked to her husband about what was going through his mind during the attack, Pelosi said: “We haven’t had that conversation yet because any revisiting of her is really traumatizing.”
