US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Japan today, the last stop on her Asia tour that included a visit to Taiwan that drew China’s ire.
AFP reporters saw the plane carrying Pelosi land at Yokota Air Base, near Tokyo, from South Korea.
Beijing, which considers the self-governing island of Taiwan part of its territory, launched unprecedented-scale military training to protest Ms Pelosi’s visit to Taipei.
Five ballistic missiles launched by China appear to have landed in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said earlier today, adding that it was the first such incident.
When the Chinese military high schools were announced, Tokyo, a close ally of Washington, expressed its “concern”.
Pelosi, 82, on her first visit to Japan since 2015, is to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida tomorrow morning, according to public broadcaster NHK.
