“No conversation took place in the meeting I had with my Turkish counterpart, about co-exploitation with the object of natural resources in the Aegean”, said the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, speaking tonight in the plenary session of the Parliament.
Earlier, Hellenic Solution MP Konstantinos Hitas had asked the Minister of National Defense about the statement of his Turkish counterpart, after their recent meeting, with which Mr. Akar had talked about joint exploitation in the Aegean. “We,” said Mr. Hitas, “do not believe this statement.” However, he called on the minister, on the occasion of his presence in Parliament, to refute Akar’s allegations about the content of their meeting.
“I did not have any such authority, nor did I have any such authority to discuss with my counterpart, Turkish Minister of Defense, the issue of co-exploitation of the Aegean, in terms of natural resources,” replied the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos. What was discussed – the minister clarified – is that given the great geopolitical turmoil in the region, it will be in the interest of both “to drop the tensions that we experienced as countries last summer and therefore, the defense ministers will have to work out ways which will lead to de-escalation of tensions and the consolidation of a calmer climate in the region, in order to have a calm summer, and from this calm summer to benefit the tourist economy for both countries “.
