N. Panagiotopoulos met with Bob Menendez – Meeting with Rand Corporation executives

The Minister of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, met today with the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Senate, Senator Robert Menendez.

As announced, the expansion and deepening of the Strategic Defense Relationship between Greece and the US, the war in Ukraine, the security situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the broader geopolitical security challenges were discussed.

N. Panagiotopoulos recognized the decisive role of R. Menendez in expanding the bilateral defense cooperation between Greece and the USA, and in promoting important issues for Greece and the Greek-American community. The Greek minister referred in particular to the upgraded role of the port of Alexandroupoli, particularly in providing support to Ukraine and transporting personnel and means to NATO’s eastern wing.

Regarding Turkey’s provocative and transgressive behavior, N. Panagiotopoulos pointed out that with overflights over Greek islands and frequent statements about the demilitarization of the islands, it creates tension in the region in violation of International Law. He also referred to the efforts to reduce tensions and the legislative initiative of the US House of Representatives on the issue of selling fighter jets to Turkey and upgrading Turkish F-16s.

Besides, this morning, N. Panagiotopoulos had a meeting with executives of the think tank Rand Corporation.

This afternoon, he is scheduled to meet with Senate Defense Committee Chairman Senator Jack Reed, House Defense Committee member Rep. Mike Rogers, Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues member Rep. Gus Bilirakis and with the executive director of the Hellenic American Leadership Council, Eddie Zemenidis.
