Mujica says there is a lack of information about election results in Venezuela, according to media

Former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica said there is a lack of “credible” information about the outcome of the Venezuelan elections.

Speaking to Uruguayan newspaper Búsqueda, Mujica said that he would later “speak publicly about Venezuela, when there is more information. But right now there is no credible information about what happened in the elections anywhere, neither from one side nor the other.”

The former Uruguayan president told the newspaper that he had “nothing to do” with the statement published on social media by the National Liberation Movement-Tupamaros (MLN-T), of which he was one of the main leaders. In the message, the MLN-T described the Venezuelan presidential elections as “an exemplary electoral act.”

From the farm where he is resting while undergoing treatment for esophageal cancer, Mujica told Búsqueda media that the MLN-T text does not represent him and that he was not consulted about its drafting. The former president of Uruguay added that he has “doubts” about the result released by Venezuela’s National Electoral Council.

A CNN is trying to contact former President Mujica and representatives of his party for comment.

Venezuela’s opposition contested the results

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said that “she can already prove the truth”, highlighting that Edmundo González is, in fact, the country’s elected president.

According to Machado, the opposition has access to 73.2% of the electoral records, which would prove González’s victory.

Nicolás Maduro proclaimed president

On Monday afternoon (29), the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Nicolás Maduro president of the country.

Maduro pledged to make public all presidential vote data in a private conversation with Brazil’s foreign policy envoy Celso Amorim on Monday (29), according to a source with knowledge of the conversation.

Amorim traveled to Venezuela to oversee Sunday’s (28) presidential elections, and held talks with Maduro and opposition candidate Edmundo González on Monday (29).

The source did not clarify when the data would be published by Maduro.
