The Minister of the Interior, Makis Voridis, on Wednesday, July 13, sworn in the head of the newly established Special Secretariat for the Protection of Companion Animals of the Ministry of the Interior, Marianthi Dimopoulou.
The Special Secretariat for the Protection of Companion Animals was established at the initiative of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and its objective is to monitor and strictly implement the regulatory framework, created by Law 4830/2021 for the protection of companion animals and ensuring their well-being , as well as the management of stray pets, with strict adherence to welfare rules. Also, the purpose is to set up a control mechanism and to cooperate with the competent bodies, with the aim of eliminating the phenomena of abusive behavior towards animals.
Marianthi Dimopoulou is a lawyer specializing in Animal Law, an activist for their rights and a professor in the “Legal (II)” course at Zero Stray Academy.
It cooperates with animal welfare associations and organizations throughout the country as well as with municipalities advising on matters of stray animal management. He is an Auditor/Lead Auditor, with knowledge in Negotiation and a master’s degree in Human Resources Management. He participates in the Interinstitutional Master’s Program of the Kapodistrian University of Athens “Animals: Ethics, Law, Welfare”.
