The governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, Eduardo Riedel, declared an emergency in five municipalities affected by forest fires. The cities included in the decree are Corumbá, Ladário, Miranda, Aquidauana and Porto Murtinho.
The emergency situation is valid for 90 days, starting this Tuesday (14), when the decree was published in the Official Gazette.
According to the government, the Mato Grosso do Sul Military Fire Department detected, this year, a 98.5% increase in the burned area of the Pantanal compared to last year.
Also according to the decree, the municipalities affected by forest fires are also under the effect of the heat wave that is hitting Brazil, with very low levels of air humidity.
“In the municipalities of the Pantanal biome, temperatures above 38°C and relative air humidity values between 21% and 27% were recorded, and in the municipalities of Porto Murtinho and Corumbá temperatures of 42.7°C and 42.0°C, respectively, resulting in the emergence of hundreds of hot spots and large fires, mainly in the Pantanal region”, says the text.
With the emergency situation declared, all study bodies are authorized to act in the region to combat the fires and recover the affected area. Volunteers can be recruited to help fight the fire and assist the affected population, including fundraising campaigns.
