The Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul carried out this Saturday (25) an operation against diversion of donations for flood victims in the city of Eldorado do Sul, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre.
According to complaints received by the body, members of the municipal Civil Defense were collecting donations to benefit future voters.
The MP-RS Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (GAECO) carried out nine search and seizure warrants against three public agents.
Of the three investigated, at least two are pre-candidates in this year's municipal elections, according to the MP. The warrants were carried out at the suspects' home, at City Hall and in city warehouses. Cell phones, documents, money, among others, were seized.
The Public Ministry's investigation investigates the crimes of embezzlement, embezzlement and criminal association during a state of public calamity. The municipal Civil Defense temporarily removed the three members, but they can still perform other public functions.
Also this Saturday, after the operation, prosecutors met with members of the Eldorado do Sul City Hall and other public bodies and with members of the army. At the meeting, the MP mediated for the military to take over the delivery of donations to the victims in the municipality.
City Hall was also asked to present a work plan for using public resources already available to assist victims and rebuild the city.
Flooded city
The municipality of Eldorado do Sul was one of the most affected by the floods of the Guaíba and Jacuí Rivers. The water left the entire urban area of the city completely flooded.
According to data from City Hall, more than 30 thousand inhabitants had to leave their homes. According to the latest census by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the municipality has around 40 thousand inhabitants.
