In the birthplace of Jesus in Bethlehem this year's Christmas is nothing like previous years, as there is an atmosphere of mourning for its victims war between Israel and Hamas.
In a powerful symbolic image, the figures of Mary and Joseph have been placed in black and the divine infant in a white shroud as a tribute to the dead children who are victims of the fighting in the Palestinian enclave.


The manger scene which is surrounded by ruins symbolizing the destruction in the Gaza Strip, but also the white sheets referring to the dead civilians is set up next to the church of the nativity.
Moreover, Bethlehem which at this time of the year is full of people and tourists, is deserted this year with hotels empty and many not open at all. Inside the temple there are only a few local Christians who are praying.

In fact, the authorities have decided to limit the celebration to a religious level due to the war.
