An armadillo spider was found inside the toy box of a three-year-old child, resident of Nova Lima, in Minas Gerais. The boy's mother recorded her surprise when she saw the spider inside the house and published the report on social media to serve as a warning to parents.
The video, made by Ellen Martins, who is a digital content creator, was published on January 27, but only now have the images gone viral on the internet.
“Alert, especially for those who have children at home”, wrote the mother in the caption of the publication.
In the report, Ellen reported that her son, just three years old, was bitten by the arachnid. According to his mother, the boy had an immediate allergic reaction and felt severe pain in his finger, exactly where he was stung.
Ellen had to take the child to the hospital. After receiving medication, the boy woke up the next day feeling better.
One day after the unexpected encounter with the spider in her own home, Ellen stated that after checking around the house, she found another spider again, also in one of the places in the property where her son usually plays.
In November last year, a similar case happened in Ubatuba, on the north coast of São Paulo. An armadillo spider, of the same species found by Ellen in her son's toys, was located inside a supermarket in the city of São Paulo.
Ellen's publication already has more than 63 thousand likes and serves as a warning to the country.
The armor spiders
Armed spiders (genus Phoneutria) are considered dangerous due to the venom they possess and can even lead to the death of the bitten person.
According to an Epidemiological Bulletin released by the Ministry of Health in 2022, spiders rank third in the number of accidents involving venomous animals in the country.
Also according to the folder, spiders such as armadeiras can live in or near homes, and can be quite aggressive. They generally shelter under trunks and palm trees, but they can also lodge in shoes, behind furniture and curtains around the house.
Since 2016, the Ministry has made recommendations in the Health Surveillance Guide that seek to identify possible flaws that could facilitate the occurrence of accidents involving venomous animals, such as spiders.
