Russia today accused Ukrainian forces of blocking the evacuation of civilians via a “humanitarian corridor” from a factory in Sheverodonetsk, a city in eastern Ukraine.
“The Russian side has provided a humanitarian corridor to allow the evacuation of civilians from the Nitrogen chemical plant in Severodonetsk. Despite these measures, (…) the Kiev authorities cynically prevented the humanitarian operation,” the Russian Defense Ministry accused. in his announcement.
Russia announced on Tuesday that it would set up a “humanitarian corridor” today, Wednesday, from 08:00 to 20:00 (Greek time and time) to allow civilians who have taken refuge at the Azot plant to leave Sheverodonetsk for the direction of territories controlled by the Moscow forces to the north.
The Russian Defense Ministry, however, accused the Ukrainian forces of “violating the ceasefire several times” and of “using the ceasefire for humanitarian purposes to re-deploy to more favorable (combat) positions.”
These allegations could not be independently verified.
A strategic city in eastern Ukraine, Sheverodonetsk, has been the scene of fierce clashes between the Ukrainian army and Moscow forces as well as their pro-Russian separatist allies for weeks.
According to Ukrainian authorities, several hundred people have taken refuge in the Nitrogen plant, which Kyiv claims is constantly bombed.
This situation is reminiscent, on a smaller scale, of what was happening at the Azofstal steel complex in Mariupol, a large port in the southeast, which fell to the Russians in May after several weeks of siege.
Hundreds of civilians had taken refuge in the underground galleries in Azovstal before being trapped there, alongside Ukrainian fighters.
Russia has repeatedly announced the creation of humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians, but many agreements have collapsed, with Moscow and Kyiv accusing each other of violating them.
