More than 6 million people died of the pandemic worldwide

The global death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic surpassed the tragic milestone of six million dead on Tuesday, reaching 6,004,421 yesterday afternoon, according to data compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Laboratory-confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 reached 446,511,318, according to the same source.

The United States has by far the deadliest death toll, with 951,348 deaths out of a total of more than 78 million cases, accounting for 17.6% and 15.8% of the total, respectively. They are followed by Brazil (652,829 deaths) and India (515,355 deaths). The position of the two countries is reversed in terms of the number of infections (42.97 million in India, 29.13 million in Brazil).

The European and American continents record the most confirmed cases so far (183 million and 148 million respectively). Their position is reversed in terms of deaths (2,649,627 versus 1,891,911 respectively).

The WHO estimates, given the surplus mortality directly and indirectly linked to the pandemic, that the actual death toll could be as much as three times the official figure.
