In 2024, 311 cases of violence were recorded against political leaders or their families running for office in the 2024 Municipal Elections. The data released is part of a survey by the Observatory of Political and Electoral Violence (OVPE) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UniRio ).
The data collected shows patterns of violence related to the municipal electoral period. Among the cases, 83 affected pre-candidates or their families, while another 228 affected candidates or their families.
The study points out that the closer to the voting period, the greater the incidence of cases of violence. In September, 149 episodes were recorded. See the graph:

The Northeast Region leads the ranking, with a total of 132 cases, a number that represents 42.4% of the total. The Southeast Region appears in second place with 108 episodes (34.7%). The sample recorded cases of violence until October 2nd of this year.
Of the 25 Brazilian states that reported cases of violence, São Paulo leads the ranking with 50 recorded episodes, or 16.1% of the total. Rio de Janeiro, with 43 episodes (13.8%), Bahia with 29 (9.3%), Ceará with 24 (7.7%) and Paraíba with 22 (7.1%), complete the five states with higher incidence.
The main categories to be counted, according to the Observatory’s note, are: physical, psychological, sexual, economic and semiotic violence.
Physical violence is highlighted with 167 episodes (53.7%), which also totaled, between January and October, 53 attempted homicides and 35 completed homicides. Psychological violence – which includes threats and intimidation – recorded 84 episodes (27%). Subsequently, economic violence, with 32 cases (10.3%), semiotic violence, with 26 (8.4%) and, finally, two cases of sexual violence (0.6%), complete the highlights of the study.
