The Afghan government today significantly revised down the death toll from the earthquake that occurred on Saturday in the western part of the countrypointing out that the dead amount to “more than 1,000”.
The Disaster Management Ministry had initially announced that the 6.3-magnitude earthquake, which struck Saturday’s Herat province and was followed by eight aftershocks, had killed more than 2,000 people. “We have over 1,000 dead since the first incident,” said today, correcting the previous report, the Taliban’s health minister, Qaladar Ebad, as reported by APE-MPE.
He attributed the confusion over the quake’s death toll to the isolation of the worst-hit areas and double-counting by the various agencies involved in the rescue efforts.
And another earthquake, too 6.3 degrees, was recorded today in the same area, where thousands of people are still sleeping in the open for four days as their homes have been destroyed. In today’s earthquake, one person died and 130 were injured, according to the authorities.
