Moldova summons Russian ambassador to express ‘concern’

Moldova on Friday summoned Russia’s ambassador to protest the Russian general, who said Moscow wanted to take control of southern Ukraine in order to gain access to a breakaway region of Moldova.

Moldova has expressed “deep concern” to the Russian ambassador over the remarks by Russian General Rustam Minekayev, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

“Moldova” considers these statements unfounded and contradictory with Russia’s support for our country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, “the Moldovan foreign ministry said in a statement.

“Moldova is a neutral country,” he said, calling on Moscow to “respect this principle.”

Moldova is concerned about statements by General Rustam Minekayev, who said today that Moscow wanted to “take full control of Donbass (east) and the south of Ukraine.”

According to him, the control of the Ukrainian south will allow to help the pro-Russian separatists of Transnistria, who have ruled this region of Moldova since 1992, which borders the western part of Ukraine.

“Control of southern Ukraine will be a corridor to Transnistria, where we also see instances of repression of the Russian-speaking population,” Minekayev said.
