Mold and infections, the Instagram post of actress Tori Spelling

On Instagram, Spelling wrote: “Let’s talk about mold. Here we are again in the emergency room. We have been trapped in a spiral of illness for months. Sick people. Then on the mend. Then get sick again. I thought, well, this is what happens when you have little kids going to school. They carry disease all the time, don’t they? But when it comes to the point where they are much sicker when they are at home than when they are in school, the time has come to reevaluate what is happening. Seeing my children sleep all day and feel dizzy as soon as they stand up, I knew something far worse was going on. Upon inspection we discovered severe mold in our home 😱. Everything started to make new sense. Has anyone ever had mold infections? You keep getting sick, one infection after another. Respiratory infections. Forms of extreme allergy up to the rashes of my poor Finn, with also sore throat and high fever». Tori Spelling concluded her post by letting it be known that she’s already moved to look for a new housing solution, so as not to stay an extra day in the house infested with mold. “Thank you for being rented: we have to leave.”

Mold infections, talk to the doctor

As specified by the Dr Paolo Pigatto, specialist in dermatology and allergy at Galeazzi Hospital in Milan«mold is part of the mushroom family and is present both indoors and outdoors. Obviously, it is more common outside than inside, but the fact remains that mold can frequently hide in the walls of the house. Molds, just like mushrooms, they reproduce by spores, carried by air, insects and water. And here people who already have various forms of allergies can, in contact with mold and following the inhalation of spores, develop adverse reactions. Mold infection tends to affect the upper respiratory tract and, in the worst case, the lungs. The period of greatest presence and concentration of mold is that of summer-autumn, because molds benefit from standing water and warm weather, as they die in winter with frosts. Inside homes, the places potentially at risk of mold are the hot-humid ones, above all the bathroom, the shower cubicle, the kitchen, the basements and the walls facing north. Outdoors, on the other hand, mold proliferates where there is decomposition of vegetation (for example, rotten leaves and wet weeds). To prevent possible health complications, especially if you are allergic, the first tip is to ventilate the domestic spaces as frequently as possibleto prevent moisture concentration. Likewise, it is important to limit the time spent in risky environments, just as it is fundamental clean the air conditioning filters frequently and monitor the presence of any dark halos on the walls (sign of mould). In the same way, don’t forget to promptly resolve any leaks, keep sinks, showers and tubs clean and clear, always so as not to worsen the humidity level. With good management, severe mold infections can be avoided.

Symptoms

«As for the symptoms to be monitored, the most classic are a runny nose, red eyes, colds, asthma, dermatitis, nasal congestion, itchy throat and only in the worst case broncho-pneumonia and wheezing. Fortunately, mold infections are not very frequent, since they affect 3% of allergy sufferers. But undoubtedly in the presence of repeated symptoms it is important to proceed with tests and medical checks to obtain a timely diagnosis. Only following the diagnosis, in fact, is it possible to access any pharmacological therapies ».
