Moïse case: “Refugees are welcome in Rio”, says Paes

The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, said this Friday (4th) that the document that will be delivered to Amnesty International regarding the brutal death of Congolese Moïse Kabamgabe, in Barra da Tijuca, is ready and signed by him.

According to Paes, the municipality has been accompanying the Congolese’s family, as well as offering all possible social tools from the Social Assistance Secretariat.

“We are open to dialogue with all Human Rights Commissions. I signed today steps we are taking in relation to the family for Amnesty International. I personally received Moïse’s family here. I have been talking permanently with the secretary Laura Carneiro and we need a deep discussion. We live in a racist country,” said Paes.

According to the city hall, next Wednesday (9), the municipality will meet with representatives of the Cape Verde and Angolan consulates to discuss the conditions of refugees in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

“Refugees are very welcome here in Rio. By the way, next Wednesday, I will receive the consul of Angola and the Consul of Costa Verde, here in Rio. Let’s deepen the discussion about refugees. It is a topic, for us, very clear. This is a city that has always welcomed visitors who chose Rio to live, to live. Therefore, we will always protect them and make them happy here”, concluded Eduardo Paes.

Also this Friday, the Human Rights Commission of the Chamber of Deputies informed that it is evaluating a diligence to Rio de Janeiro, to monitor the case closely.

The parliamentarians asked the authorities to adopt rigorous measures in the investigation of the facts, such as the identification of the authors and their responsibility.

Both the state government, the Public Ministry and the Civil Police have already been notified to send information.

The Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) reported that it is swiftly adopting all appropriate measures in the case and that it has already obtained from the Justice the temporary arrest of the three men caught by security cameras beating the young Congolese.
